What is the Freestyle Sensor?

The FreeStyle Libre sensor is a component capable of capturing your glucose level every minute and allows you to read it whenever you need to and wherever you need to, without having to prick your fingers, as you do with a traditional glucometer.

It is known as the continuous glucose monitoring flash system.

This sensor lasts for 14 continuous days, stores data for up to 8 hours, does not need to be calibrated and is water-resistant to a limit of 1 metre immersion for up to 30 minutes.

How does it work?

The FreeStyle Libre sensor operation is revolutionary and offers a simple method of measuring interstitial glucose.

Here are the steps to follow.

  1. Apply the sensor:

The FreeStyle Libre sensor is applied to the upper back of the arm with a disposable device called an “applicator”.

When applying the sensor, a small flexible filament is inserted under the skin, being fixed in place thanks to an adhesive layer.
  1. Scan the sensor:

To take a glucose reading, simply scan the sensor using the reader or the mobile phone app, a quick and painless process. The system also offers LibreView, which provides a comprehensive report to facilitate data analysis.

It’s important to mention how easy it is to use the FreeStyle LibreLink app, available for iPhone and Android.

  1. Monitor your glucose:

Each reading provides up-to-date data, as well as the glycaemic history over the last 8 hours and a trend arrow indicating the behaviour of the glucose: rising, falling or slowly changing.

Advantages of the Freestyle Sensor

  • Allows continuous use.
  • Painless.
  • Quick and easy.
  • Stores glucose readings.
  • Accurate and exact measurements.
  • Skin protection.
  • They’re perfect for protecting people’s skin.

Freestyle Sensor uses in sport

The Freestyle Libre sensor is a product suitable for patients with diabetes and/or on insulin therapy.

Specifically with people who practice sports such as road cycling, long-distance running, swimming.

As well as athletes of intermittent disciplines, allowing tjem to continuously detect glucose variations.

To carry out this type of activity, it’s important to bear in mind that the sensor is a delicate piece, so it must be protected.

Don’t stay more than 30 minutes in the water or cover it when playing sports, they’re key to its proper functioning.

An added value of the flash system is that both the reader and the application allow the user to enter event notes, among which you can include exercise practice.

Finally, if you have any questions regarding the Freestyle sensor, I would recommend that you ask your doctor or speak directly with the subsidiary through their contact channels, either by phone or email.
